It's probably true that the frequency and degree of payback has had a negative impact, it might be better if it was limited to one or two threads where we could chose to be amused by it or ignore it. I'm not sure that would succeed though, I and others tried to persuade Taipan and his ever shrinking fan club to limit our feuding to a single thread but to no avail.

I remember a time when this forum was packed with useful information on all sorts of real estate related information but it slowly degenerated into an endless argument between bears and bulls. Most of us have been guilty of pouring gasoline on those flames at one time or another so I hesitate to criticize Whippy for being the most committed to the argument.

It really would be nice to see a return of those tips on landlord/tenant issues, best building materials, planning and zoning issues, law cases, and a whole host of other relevent topics presented and discussed without the bull versus bear thing distracting the posters.

My fear is that if and when the market turns, Taipan and a whole bunch of other currently dormant bears will fall out of the woodwork screaming "we were always right". If that happens this forum is surely doomed.

LOL - so we have a situation where whipmaster's effect on the forum quality is "probably" negative and it "might" be better if the payback was limited to a single thread. But under some hypothetical, if the market crashes (which it never will), the forum is "surely" doomed.

wow... biased much?

speak for yourself. this place would surely be better without both whipmaster and taipan. Not probably better without one of them and surely better without the other.

Whipmaster's comments appear to amuse some people and infuriate others. I suspect the overall impact might well be negative but I lack your absolute certainty. I envy you your God like understanding of human nature. (sarc.) Presumably your superior insight will enable you to easily answer Whippy and explain why so many forums which devoted themselves to the bearish view have failed whilst this one still survives, despite the ceaseless bear baiting.

Doesn't it strike you as a bit odd that the forums which are "Whippy free" have died out while this one still enjoys a regular audience? Certainly the activity has dropped as dozens of exhausted bears lost face and went into hiding, but the forum survives. My concern is that when the market has another one of its routine collapses, the volume of bearish self-congratulation will be so enourmous that it will doom the forum to becoming a stage for discredited bears all trying to pretend they were always right. It's likely that their mass jubilation will crowd out all other topics. I suspect that if you think Whippy is a major negative force here, you ain't seen nothin yet!

So you believe the market will never crash! Oh well, so much for your God like understanding of human nature. Take a look at history and you will see that the market is cyclical, it has experienced many wild gyrations, drops in value of between 30% and 50% have happened before and will almost certainly happen again. To ignore history and claim that the market will "never" crash reveals an extraordinary lack of understanding of how markets work.

I never said that. In some ways I miss Taipan, his "Homer Simpson" combination of idiocy and arrogance was often quite entertaining.

Not only only did you misquote me, you implied that I was speaking for others. I speak for myself, others can post their own opinions just as you have.

Now why don't you answer Whippy's questions? I'm interested in trying to follow your logic too.
In fond memory of Taipan, a model of modesty, decency, dignity and tolerance. Long may we all prosper from the tremendous legacy of worldly wisdom and specialized real estate knowledge which he left in the "Arguments" thread.

Let me answer your question with a question.

Why did this forum live prior to whipmaster's arrival? Who knows? Who cares? He's annoying. For the record, Taipan was annoying.

It's interesting that you constantly qualify negative comments about whipmaster with "might well" and "suspect"? tedeastside, whipmaster, redlantern are all the same type of person with the same level of annoyance. the fact that a person chooses to defend one and criticize another says more about said person than the posters. They are all annoying. Or none of them are annoying. but hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Why did this forum live prior to whipmaster's arrival?

HonkyTonkMan helped and Johnny Horton backed him up, Fawker! hahahahaha

Geyser,

I think a pretty fair unbiased gauge is whether any moderated online community, real estate related or not, would tolerate posts by someone like Whipmaster. The answer is a definitive no.

I also don't agree that other bear blogs are dead, VCI is still going strong, though admittedly its even more right leaning than ever.
VREAA was always a one (wo)man show that will serve its purpose into the future, an anecdote archive.

What I think the entire shift is indicative of is that lots of people are packing up and leaving the city in favour of greener, more fair pastures. This is reflected in the type of people that come to post on an Van RE website.

Most of the posting activity on this website is from Whipmaster himself, its strange and unhealthy. I'm surprised you don't have anything curious to say about a member that makes dozens of threads and post in them continuously talking to himself. Bizarre, no?

It's like a blog and the readership is a way up.
The Crash'trds, such as yourself, come here regularly for their daily dose of punishment regardless of their claim that "Whipmaster" is on their "ignore" list. You can't help yourselves as most of you are addicted gamblers who live to suffer.
The Bulls have a chuckle watching you dummies of "superior intellect and risk assessment abilities", getting pummelled.... so we're all happy.

It's not the message but the messenger. Whipmaster is an idiot... he'd never reveal his true identity and act like this.
