Still bullshit

If the fan is located in a bathroom where water could make contact, then it could have a transformer that would change the out put from AC to DC, there by switching the wire polarity would indeed cause the fans to run backwards.

So yes it's possible, Whether this is the case here, I don't know.

Met friends for dinner. They now live elsewhere, but are still closely in touch with many people who bought brand-new or recently built townhouses in a large, well-known development in Port Moody built by a large, well known developer that does this all over the LM. Guess what? The developer's subs put the fans in wrong. The fans that were supposed to extract moisture out of the townhomes to prevent mold, were in fact blowing it all through the townhomes. Now all of them bar one, which had an inspection were the fan problem was caught, have mold. In one case black mold all over the attic. The strata is in shock. These townhomes are only a few years old

These are young families with small children. The warranty has just expired I believe :( Makes me crazy. We actually had a townhome built by the same developer on burnaby mountain- we have since left, but it makes you wonder about others out there.

Be careful when buying or renting in PM. Make sure you get an inspection/ask to see minutes, etc.

I call bullshit on this one.

What fan? Bathroom fan? Or are you talking about some fictional fan that runs 24 hrs/day keeping the house dry like Arizona.
And even a bathroom fan won't do as you suggested - it's designed to blow air out (no link to attic), and if it's blowing inward the moisture stays in the bathroom...and guess what? bathrooms are tiled just for this reason.
How many urban myths do we need to sift through on this site?

Hate to break it to you but this is in fact true. Friends are renting in this complex and there is indeed mould in their attic. The 'good' news is that the townhouses are still under warranty (just). What I don't know if it is fan related but regardless it is there and not just in one unit. Three townhouses have been sitting on the market unsold for over a month after other units had been selling within days previously.

Also,

I have no problem telling you privately who it is. As for why people aren't talking about it online, maybe they are worried about selling them.

Happened to a friend's complex a couple years ago -- the problem was fixed but he sold immediately afterward, before more problems were discovered. The attics should be ventilated so this doesn't happen, but sometimes the contractor cuts corners and the moisture has nowhere to go, causing mold in the attic and even down the walls.

I also worked in construction years ago and saw lots of stupid mistakes made by workers who were stoned or who drank several beer at a nearby pub during lunch. It happens.

Am now convinced ETB is a cheerleader for developers. and Greenhorn, too.

Tried to PM some of you that asked the name of the development - for some reason the message just sits in my outbox, doesn't seem to go to sent messages? Let me know if you received my PMs. thanks.

and HA at whoever said Polygon is an excellent builder.

Agree that the owners are probably reluctant to discuss it for fear of word getting out. Can't blame them.

Google doesn't index all strata minutes. Without a property name, how would LTB find it?
