I am forever outpriced

Postby abbydabby on Thu Oct 22, 2009 7:03 am

Well bulls,
You were right. I was wrong. I am now a renter and even though both my wife and I work, we are not willing to spend all the money we make on a decent (as in non-luxury) home. So we decided to rent for the rest of our lives so that we can afford to go out occasionally and travel once a year. But congratulations to you! I guess the new reality is that average income families can really only afford dumps or rent something decent. No middle ground. Good buy RE market.

abbydabby - your anecdote has been archived at VREAA as a "statement of exhaustion, resignation, and some determination."
I hope that that is okay with you.

Oh sure.
And when I die, do not put me in a coffin. I'd rather my body become food for trees.

Sounds like an idea for a Woody Guthrie song.

what about a townhouse or half duplex? Or even a large condo? There will be some buying opportunities for those mentioned in the next 6-8 months. Keep your eyes on the daily stats on nvcondos.ca - when you start seeing many weeks of less than 50% sell/list ratio you know that prices will be coming down. Don't give up yet.
the cure for higher prices is moving to a destination with lower prices

Because you add anything to the penny. But you may have missed the big picture. Have you ever heard any accountant joke?

There you have it. The reason people are priced out has nothing to do with exorbitant price increases, it's because they're a spendthrift or a miser. Somehow, the two opposites lead to the same result.

Even assuming the dubious possibility that Vancouver achieves some kind of 'Monaco-playground-of-the-rich' status (look at the sky out the window for evidence to the contrary), you can always save and retire to a smaller town and buy a place mortgage free.

Not sure what your last comment 'Have you ever heard any accountant joke?' means.

funny. Haven't you seen the tv ads recently? Accountants are "big picture" thinkers now. Haven't you noticed that accountants have always been offering consulting " big picture" kind of services? Also, successful accountants like BCAccount, earn great money and are probably less impacted by this insane real estate price.

BC accountant, I dont mean to get personal. I dont know what you did or did not do.

But in general, accountants are called bean counters for a reason. I am an accoutnant too.

It's unfortunate that you feel that way, the many accountants I know are all very different people with different skill sets. Most of the work I do is far from bean counting, it required a creative mind, the ability to think outside the box and constantly integrating new/changing information.

Perhaps we are in different industries.... accountants are employed in a wide range of positions. I think your 'in general' comment is limited to what you see in your industry and what was once the typical accountants' position.
