It's now a depression (for me)

Postby JeffSkilling on Tue May 05, 2009 1:27 pm

The saying goes when your neighbour loses his job it's a recession, and when you lose your job it's a depression. Well it's now a depression at my house, my firm laid off 25 professionals this morning, including me  . Anyone out there have any tips for the newly unemployed in terms of keeping up with mortgage payments, job search consultants, etc...

BTW my next door neighbour lost his job three weeks ago (architect) and the lady across the street (lawyer) has been unemployed for three months she is thinking of becoming a bus driver! Until these last 6 months I've never known a "professional" who had ever been unemployed, it's kind of disturbing.

Bummer, sorry to hear that. Hope you received a good severance and qualify for EI. You can always speak with your lender about payment options such as short term interest only. However not sure if they are in the mood for this these days.

Very sorry to hear that. As I'm sure everyone tells you, networking is key. Contact everyone you know and get in front of as many people as you can. I find recruiters to be a complete waste of time.

Good luck with your search.

Hey Jeff. Sorry to hear about your situation. Hope you're back to work soon. I've been worried for a while about us too. No one is safe as far as I'm concerned. The MSM isn't reporting too much on this and I have a few friends out of work now.

Sorry to hear that Jeff  . Why not start networking right here? You never know someone might have a lead for you. What is your profession?

Hi jeff, if you are skilled & experienced you can get another job very quickly. Even in difficult times like these. IMHO it's the people with difficult personalities, lack of experience, or unrealistic expectations who remain unemployed.

Presumably you have severance, so you're well positioned to quickly get another job and be earning money before that runs out. Good luck.

Im a self employed woodworker in construction with only my experience and Im still going strong. Some people I know with formal training and working for big companies have suffered. There is no such thing as job security, but there's always some way to make the best of any situation. You'll be up again

Another option is to start your own business.

Shitty news. I went through it during the dot com bomb.

What kind of work do you do?

Haha good title. 10% unemployment means 90% are still working. Many of my friends who have recently been laid off have found work quickly, despite the ominous clouds on the horizon.

Jeff:
Well it's now a depression at my house,

Sorry to hear that. That's not so good. I don't have any good advice on how to get a job.
However, if I may offer this:
1) Exercise regularly
2)Eat regularly
3)Stay away from drugs and alchohol.
4)Do not watch tv it'll sap your intelligence and depress you.
5) Get the right amount of sleep.

The spoils do not always go to the fastest and the strongest, it goes to those who can weather the storm.
Good luck to you. :)
